How can Deep Listening practice promote creativity, mindfulness, and dialogue across the campus community?


ACTIVITIES DESIGNED

Fifth House Ensemble implements a composition residency within the Music Department, campus-wide Deep Listening sessions, and a “We Are Good” residency over the course of the Spring semester. 

Activities include:

  • Virtual Deep Listening workshops: available to the university community during regular Chapel service

  • Virtual Composition Residency

      • Concepting Workshop

      • Revision Workshop

      • Digital Livestream Performance

  • “We Are Good,” - a five-visit residency engaging local community, rooted in the process of collective decision making through creative acts. The process culminates in a Deep Listening Jam featuring creative work developed by participants.


OBJECTIVES

During this residency, students will:

  • Develop individual and group musical mindfulness rituals through Deep practice, fostering creativity and community

  • Collaborate with Fifth House Ensemble musicians to create new compositions for live performance on digital platforms

  • Learn the extra-musical capacities and skill sets required to be a 21st-century musician

  • Learn Story Circle facilitation techniques to cultivate community dialogue

  • Compose original text scores inspired by the social themes of We Are Good
